What are the Architectural Materials?

The materiality of buildings is what our bodies come into direct contact with; cold metal handles, warm wooden walls and hard glass windows, if they are hard glass handles, cold metal walls and warm wooden windows.  Materiality is as important as form, function and location - or more precisely, inseparable from all three.

Here, we have selected many types of building materials that should be part of any architect's design vocabulary, from the very familiar (such as concrete and steel) to building materials that some of our readers may not know about, read on to learn more about what's involved.

1. Concrete

Concrete is the most widely used architectural building material in the world, making it a good starting material for understanding. However, it also has a significant environmental impact, including a carbon footprint of up to 5% of global emissions. To learn all about concrete design, the Concrete Center has assembled a series of useful reports, many of which are free to register.

HPMC

HPMC

In building materials, the addition amount of HPMC is very low, only 0.1%-1%, but it plays an irreplaceable role and can significantly improve the water retention, fluidity and lubricity of building materials. Building materials added with HPMC are easier to mix and use, improve the work efficiency of construction workers, extend the open time, improve the bonding strength, and form a smooth and delicate surface coating.

2. Wood

One of the world's oldest and most traditional architecture materials is, of course, wood. Thanks to engineered wood products, this material is beginning to take on new forms, and with the even translucent nature of high-rise buildings, this diverse material is being taken to new heights.

3. Plastic

While this may seem like a cheap, unsustainable material for some, one should not be so quick to judge what might be held in plastic. We produce so much of it; why not recycle it in the form of construction or bioplastic? The whole new world that 3D printing brings? The American Chemistry Council has a good overview of plastics as a material and an outline of their primary uses in construction, with links to further resources for each material.

4. Textiles

Textiles are most often explored using tensile structures, but there are many opportunities to use this material: load-bearing chairs, inflatable spaces, fabric casting, and wooden fabrics, to name a few.

Brick

5.Brick

Despite its rigid, rectangular shape made to fit in your hand, brick architecture has been shown to create beautiful structures with the right craftsmanship. Innovative thinkers are also finding new ways to incorporate active sustainability into the small building elements. The Brick Development Association has a collection of resources for learning more about brick.

6. Bamboo

The use of bamboo usually depends on the geographical location of the building project. Where bamboo makes sense, it is a very flexible, strong, sustainable material that can be useful in many ways.

7. Organic materials

With the massive loss of habitats around the world, understanding the organic structures created by animals is the best thing to do, sooner rather than later. Not only can we learn from their use of materials, but by incorporating their organic materials into our buildings, we create opportunities for coexistence.

As with all materials, accessibility and cost play a huge role. There are definitely materials not on the list that are obvious choices in some parts of the world, so beyond that, be sure to learn about the materials around you and you're sure to have a complete resource.
