When power plants need to use two different voltages to supply power to the power system or users, or when substations need to connect to several levels of power systems with different voltages, three-winding transformers are usually used.

A three-winding transformer has three windings of high voltage, medium voltage and low voltage. The three windings of each phase are sheathed on a core column. In order to facilitate insulation, the high voltage windings are usually placed on the outermost layer.

The low-voltage winding of the step-up transformer is placed between the high-voltage and medium-voltage windings. The purpose of this arrangement is to make the leakage magnetic field evenly distributed, and the leakage reactance distribution is reasonable. The loss increases, so as to ensure a better voltage regulation rate and operating performance.

The step-down transformer is mainly for the convenience of insulation, placing the medium-voltage winding between the high-voltage and low-voltage windings. According to the characteristics of the voltage combination of the domestic power system, the standard connection group labels of three-phase three-winding transformers are YN, yn0, d11 and YN, yn0, y0.

Capacity allocation

The capacity of each winding of the three-winding power transformer is specified separately as required. The rated capacity refers to the capacity of the winding with the largest capacity among the three windings, generally the rated capacity of the primary winding. And taking this as 100%, the capacity of the three windings is configured into 100/100/50, 100/50/100, and 100/100/100.

The no-load operation principle of the three-winding transformer is basically the same as that of the double-winding transformer, but there are three voltage ratios, namely, high voltage and medium voltage, high voltage and low voltage, and medium voltage and low voltage.
