It includes sulfate that is easily soluble in water or adsorbed on the surface of soil particles, as well as the easily decomposable part of organic sulfur. When it is less than 10 ppm, sulfur fertilizer is required. The available sulfur content of paddy soil in southern China is about 10-30 ppm.

Sulfur fertilizer is mostly used as base fertilizer. The application rate varies with soil and crop. It is advisable to apply 10-15 kilograms of gypsum or 1.5-2.5 kilograms of sulfur per mu; if it is used to dip the roots of rice seedlings (commonly known as dip roots), only 1.5-2.5 kilograms of gypsum or 0.5 kilograms of sulfur powder per mu. When correcting the sulphur deficiency of crops, 0.5-2.0% sulfate solution can be used for foliar spraying (also known as extra-root topdressing).

In the field, in addition to obtaining sulfur from soil and sulfur fertilizers, crops can also directly absorb SO2 from the atmosphere through leaf pores (from the combustion of coal, petroleum, firewood, etc.); at the same time, SO2 in the atmosphere can also be diffused Or enter the soil-plant system with precipitation.
