Dealing with slippery mud and rain is another beast. Smooth, serrated grating helps, but once the surface gets packed with wet tailings, you need something more aggressive—a heavily serrated or grit-blasted surface, ideally with raised diamond or teardrop lugs. These break through clumps and give shoes real bite. Wide drainage gaps are crucial so that water and slop just fall through instead of pooling on the surface. If you’re working with sloped walkways, add removable rubber or abrasive mats that lock right into the steel grating. They give you extra grip without holding dampness against the steel.
