The cost difference between LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) and NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) battery packs is substantial and driven primarily by raw material composition. For industrial buyers, understanding this difference is essential for making informed purchasing decisions.

Raw Material Cost Disparity

The most fundamental driver of cost difference lies in the cathode materials. LFP uses iron and phosphate, both abundant and inexpensive materials available worldwide. NCM requires nickel, cobalt, and manganese. Cobalt, in particular, is scarce, geographically concentrated, and subject to significant price volatility . Nickel prices recently climbed to their highest level in over two years, further increasing pressure on NCM production costs .

Market pricing data confirms this gap. As of April 2026, LFP cathode material in China traded at approximately 56,700 RMB per ton (roughly 5.67 RMB per kilogram), while NCM 523 material reached 188,500 RMB per ton. NCM 523 commands a price roughly three times higher than LFP at the cathode material level .

Cell and Pack Price Comparison

At the complete battery cell level, the difference remains significant. Prismatic LFP cells for electric vehicle applications trade at approximately 0.34 CNY per watt-hour, while NCM cells trade at 0.47 CNY per watt-hour. This represents a roughly 28 percent premium for NCM at the cell level .

170to190 per kilowatt-hour . This means an NCM pack costs roughly 30 to 40 percent more than an equivalent LFP pack.

Why NCM Costs More

The cost drivers for NCM are multifaceted. First, cobalt and nickel are expensive commodities with volatile pricing. Second, the manufacturing process for NCM is more complex and energy-intensive than LFP production . Third, supply chain risks for cobalt, much of which comes from geopolitically unstable regions, add uncertainty premiums to pricing.

Academic analysis using the BatPaC model found that cathode active material cost contributions to NCM811-G packs were 31 percent, compared to just 18 percent for LFP-G packs. A one dollar per kilogram increase in lithium hydroxide prices raises NCM pack costs by 0.68 dollars per kilowatt-hour, while the same increase in nickel prices adds 0.72 dollars per kilowatt-hour .

Hidden Cost Factors Beyond Raw Materials

LFP offers additional cost advantages beyond the purchase price. LFP batteries have lower thermal management requirements, reducing HVAC and cooling infrastructure costs . Their superior cycle life means fewer replacements. Over a decade, an NCM system may require a major replacement around year six costing approximately 60 percent of the original system price, while LFP typically avoids this entirely .

Bottom Line

LFP battery packs are substantially cheaper than NCM packs upfront—typically 30 to 40 percent less. The gap is driven primarily by expensive nickel and cobalt in NCM cathodes. For industrial forklift applications where energy density is not the primary constraint, LFP delivers comparable or better performance at significantly lower cost.
