What Is Poplin Fabric?

Poplin is one of the traditional handicrafts in Shandong Province, China. It was originally referred to as fabrics woven on the feudal aristocracy or bureaucracy in Licheng, Penglai and other counties in Shandong Province. The hand and appearance are similar to silk, so it is called poplin. The raw materials commonly used in poplin are pure cotton, polyester/cotton, etc., and thus Cotton Poplin Fabric and polyester poplin fabric. Poplin is a plain weave fabric woven from cotton, polyester, wool, cotton and polyester blended yarn. It is a fine, smooth and shiny plain cotton fabric. Although it is plain with flat cloth, the difference is relatively large: the poplin is good, it can be made more compact, feel and visually rich; and the flat cloth is generally medium in thickness, can not be made into a very delicate hand, and the sense of simplicity.

According to the different spinning projects, it is divided into carded poplin and combed poplin. In the weaving color, there are hidden strips of poplin, satin satin poplin, jacquard poplin, color stripe poplin, flash poplin and so on. With the printing and dyeing processing of the original color poplin grey cloth, there are bleached poplin, variegated poplin and printed poplin. Poplin is a major variety in cotton. Poplin Shirt Fabric

All kinds of poplin fabrics are clean and flat, with fine texture, full grain, soft and lustrous, soft and smooth feel. However, poplin fabric has a major disadvantage, that is, the garments sewn with it are prone to longitudinal cracks. This is because the poplin warp and weft density are very different, and the strength between the warp and weft yarns is unbalanced, resulting in a warp strength that is nearly double the weft strength. 

The plain cotton fabric has a compact structure, a uniform surface, a clear texture, a smooth and soft texture, and a silky feel. The surface of the fabric has a distinct, well-proportioned, diamond-shaped particle composed of raised portions of the warp yarn.

Compared with fine cloth, Poplin Fabric has a relatively long warp direction, and the ratio of warp and weft density is about 2:1. The poplin is made of uniform warp and weft yarns, woven into a compact fabric, and then singeed, scoured, mercerized, bleached and printed, dyed and finished. Suitable for shirts, outerwear and other clothing, can also be used as an embroidered base fabric. According to the raw materials of warp and weft yarn, there are ordinary poplin, full combed poplin, half-line poplin (with strands); weaving fancy, with hidden strips of poplin, satin satin poplin, jacquard poplin, yarn-dyed poplin Color stripe poplin, flash-colored poplin, etc.; dyed and processed into bleached poplin, variegated poplin, printed poplin, etc.; some varieties are also protected by rain, non-scalding, anti-shrinking and so on. The above various poplins can be made of pure cotton yarn, and can also be made of polyester-cotton blended yarn.

The fabric of poplin is also woven with plain weave. Compared with the flat cloth, the ratio of the density to the weft density is generally 1.8 to 2.2:1. Since the warp density is significantly greater than the weft density, the surface of the fabric forms a diamond-shaped grain formed by the raised portions of the warp yarn. Weaving poplin fabrics, usually cotton or polyester-cotton fine yarn. According to the different yarns used, it is divided into yarn poplin, half-line poplin (menstrual strands), and line poplin (strands are used in both warp and weft directions).
