You may have heard of full-spectrum COB LED lighting. This type of light represents one of the most cutting-edge developments in growth light design. But what is it? What makes COB LEDs different from traditional LED growth lights?
Here is all you need to know about the full spectrum COB LED growth light.
Until recently, surface-mounted diode LEDs have been the technology of choice for LED growth lights. This technique is commonly referred to as SMD, and it involves a single diode mounted separately on a surface. They can be installed together, but they always act as several independent light sources.
COB technology-an abbreviation for "chip-on-board" promotes uniform light propagation, creates a unified light source, and reduces costs. COB LEDs are made by mounting many tiny LEDs directly on the nearby substrate. Together, these tiny diodes form a single module-a unified light source, which is essentially equivalent to a large LED chip. COB led usually emits light in all directions (180 degrees) instead of emitting light at a specific narrow-angle like SMD led.
Unlike SMD diodes where each diode has a specific spectrum, COB diodes were initially used as all blue LED diodes. Then apply a layer of phosphorescent coating on the blue LED with yellow appearance. There is no such thing as white LEDs-they all start with blue LEDs and get a phosphorescent coating that emits white light. Similar to fluorescent lights, this phosphor coating can also emit white light.
The color temperature of light can be adjusted by adjusting the mixing of phosphors. Therefore, it is possible to shift the spectrum towards the red or blue spectrum, but this will be a fixed spectrum and will not change. There is also a limit to changing the phosphor to red or blue.
A very important advantage is the increased concentration of energy. The efficiency of SMD LED growth lights is much higher than that of HID lights, but it is very difficult to fit a large amount of light energy in a small space. The LED board must be larger at higher power levels. Now, on-board chip technology has pushed power density to a higher level. The COB structure allows one driver to drive multiple chips. The result is more light output per square inch. COB led also produces less heat. COB LEDs have proven to be very effective for SMD led floodlights and light bulbs and are not suitable for higher power levels in a small space.
The optical density increases significantly because there are more diodes gathered in a compact space. Because these diodes function like a large LED chip, they produce stronger light that penetrates deeper into the canopy. COB technology also has a higher color rendering index, which means that the human eye perceives the natural color of an object under the COB LED light. Without the purple glow associated with SMD LED lights, growers can more easily identify discoloration, which may indicate a fungal attack, light burns, or any other threat to plant health.
However, perhaps one of the most significant advantages of COB LED technology is the quality of the spectrum.
