Every time you drive your vehicle, numerous engine parts must move in precise synchronization to keep it running smoothly. They adhere to a strict timing system to ensure that every component stays in sync.
Engine timing encompasses two main types: cam timing and ignition timing.
Understanding cam timing is as simple as visualizing the synchronized movement of the heaviest engine components. Thanks to cam timing, these parts move seamlessly in tandem, allowing the spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chambers of your vehicle.
As the pistons move up and down, their motion must align precisely with the opening and closing of the valves. This synchronization relies on the rotation of the engine's crankshaft, which is connected to the camshaft via an engine timing belt or chain.
If the cam timing in your vehicle is incorrect, it could result in the pistons and valves colliding, leading to engine starting issues.
When you start your vehicle, the spark plugs generate an electrical spark that ignites the fuel within the combustion chambers, setting the pistons in motion and propelling your vehicle forward.
This spark occurs just before the piston reaches the top dead center, and its timing is measured in degrees of crankshaft rotation. Since fuel combustion has a specific rate, as the engine accelerates when it's not under a heavy load, the spark timing is adjusted earlier to optimize the combustion process.
In older engines, both vacuum timing advance and centrifugal timing advance were incorporated into the distributor. However, newer engines, particularly those without distributors, rely on the engine controller for timing control. In coil-on-plug engines, each cylinder's timing can be individually adjusted based on knock sensor input if necessary.
The ignition timing plays a crucial role in ensuring that the spark plug fires at the right moment. Even a slight deviation in ignition timing can result in a noticeable decline in engine performance.

In most modern vehicles, the combustion engine follows a four-stroke cycle that repeats continuously as long as the engine is running. These four strokes are as follows:
During this stroke, the piston moves from the top dead center (TDC) to the bottom dead center (BDC), creating a vacuum that draws the air-fuel mixture into the engine through the open intake valve.
Once the intake valve closes, the piston moves from the BDC to the TDC, compressing the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber. Before this stroke concludes, the spark plug ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture.
The ignition of the air-fuel mixture drives the piston downward, rotating the crankshaft and providing power to propel the vehicle.
During this stroke, the piston ascends from the BDC to the TDC, and as the crankshaft continues to rotate, the exhaust valve opens to expel burnt fuel from the cylinder.
Each step in this cycle relies on the proper timing of your engine. Ignition timing controls when the spark plugs ignite during the compression stroke, while cam timing controls the pistons, valves, and crankshaft in each stroke. A delay in either of these timing systems will disrupt the entire cycle and cause your engine to fail.
Diagnosing faulty engine timing isn't always straightforward, but there are several common symptoms to look out for.
When your engine's cam timing is significantly off, your vehicle may fail to start altogether. If it does start, it's likely to experience misfires, emit unusual rattling noises, and produce increased emissions. Additionally, you may observe fluctuations in your vehicle's revolutions per minute (RPM).
Early or advanced ignition timing can result in hard (kickback) starting and engine ping/labor knock. Conversely, if the ignition timing is too late (also known as "retarded"), the engine may run sluggishly, exhibit poor fuel economy, and could even risk overheating.
