1 4 Butanediol Introduction
1,4-Butanediol is a saturated C4 straight-chain dihydric alcohol. When the temperature is higher than the freezing point, it is colorless oily liquid; when the temperature is lower than the freezing point, it is acicular crystal. It is hygroscopic, miscible with water, soluble in ethanol and slightly soluble in ether. Content is not less than 99.5%.
1 4-Butanediol (1,4-BDO) is a chemical compound that belongs to the family of diols, which are molecules that contain two hydroxyl groups (-OH). It is a colorless, viscous liquid with a sweet, musty odor, and it is miscible with water and many organic solvents.
1,4-BDO is used in a variety of applications, including the production of plastics, resins, and other polymers; as a solvent for pharmaceuticals, dyes, and resins; and as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is also used in the production of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), which is a chemical that is converted to the illegal drug gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB).
1,4-BDO is classified as a hazardous substance and should be handled with caution. It is toxic if ingested, and exposure to high levels of the chemical can cause eye, skin, and respiratory irritation. 1, 4-Butanediol is an important chemical raw material and an important organic chemical intermediate in fine chemical industry. At present, there are four industrial production methods of BDO, namely, alkyne aldehyde method, maleic anhydride method, butadiene method and propylene oxide method.
Main use of GBL: As a solvent, it can dissolve many polymers such as PVC, PAN, PVB and epoxy resin; it is a special solvent for varnish, paint and capacitor electrolyte; and can be used for production of herbicides (dichlorophenoxybutyric acid), azo dyes, methionine, perfumes, pharmaceuticals, NMP (N-methylpyrrolidone), γ- butyrolactam and NVP.
Main use of PBT: Engineering plastics, which can be used in automobiles, electronic appliances, light industry and industrial parts; the new fiber has characteristics of good elasticity, good hand feel and excellent chemical properties, and is applicable to lightweight fabrics; and production of films and optical fibers.
Main use of THF: As a solvent, it can be used in pharmaceutical, perfume and chemical industries; as a chemical raw material, it can be used for production of PTMEG and then used for spandex, tetrahydrophene, pyrrolidone, 2, 3 dichlorotetrahydrofuran, 1, 4 dichloroethane, ink and perfume; and for production of polyether. It is the best raw material for polyurethane extra-soft elastic fiber and high-elasticity rubber.
Main use of PU: It is used for manufacturing of tires, hydraulic seals, pipe linings, automobile dashboards and bumpers, ski boots and shoe soles stock solution, adhesives, elastomers, pastes and synthetic leather.
Main use of PBS/PBAT: It is used in package, tableware, cosmetic bottles and drug bottles, disposable medical supplies, agricultural films, pesticide and fertilizer slow-release materials, biomedical polymer materials and other fields.
The national requirement for treatment of plastic pollution has been promoted from the original "plastic bag limit" to "plastic bag ban". As an important monomer raw material in the polyurethane industry of degradable plastics, 1, 4-butanediol will surely usher in an explosive period in the implementation of the "plastic bag ban".
