Root ball netting is a revolutionary product that offers a natural way of transplanting trees and shrubs. It is designed to replace the tedious process of hand-tying burlap, hold the soil together with the roots of the plant and prevent damage during storage or transport, eliminate the cost of containerization and produce a professional-looking package. The use of this product significantly increases the speed of packing compared to traditional coarse hessian and twine-tying methods, while improving the appearance of the root ball.
Planting trees can improve your landscape and add shade to your yard. But planting needs to be done carefully to ensure that the sapling grows and thrives, eventually becoming a mature tree that can survive for decades. Knowing how and when to remove tree packing materials from the garden center for transport or shipping from the garden center will help give the tree a good start.
Root Ball Netting
The root ball of a tree is usually packed in a wire basket or net for transport. Some are wrapped in burlap or plastic to protect the roots. Once the tree has been placed in the hole dug for planting, all packing material should be removed so as not to interfere with the growth of the roots. Cut off and remove the wire mesh to expose the root ball, but do not remove the soil around the roots.
Before taking the sapling home to plant, study the mature size of the tree to ensure that it will not be placed too close to buildings, power lines, or pavements. When preparing the site for your new tree, dig a hole at least three times the size of the root ball. Place wire mesh or other packing material over the root ball while digging the hole and keep the tree in the shade and water the root ball before planting. Measure the roots so that the bottom of the trunk is flush with the ground when the hole is filled.

When planting the tree, do not grasp the trunk but lift the tree by the root ball and place it in the hole. Once the tree is settled in the planting space, use wire cutters to cut the wire mesh and remove it from the roots. This will allow the roots to spread unchecked as the tree grows. Prune any roots that have been crushed or died before filling the holes with soil. Once the tree is planted, gently tamp the soil, water the tree and remove any packing material wrapped around the trunk to protect the tree during transport.
Young trees need regular deep watering to grow and mature. The ground around the tree should be soaked once or twice a week using a slow stream of water. Take care to ensure that mowers and trimmers do not come into contact with the trunk. Wounds can allow fungus and other pests to infect the tree. Trees do not need fertilizer, but mulch can be placed around the roots to prevent weeds from growing. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk of the tree.
