Microwave popcorn is the perfect crunchy, salty and sometimes sweet snack. Who can resist the sound of popping grains and the smell wafting from the kitchen as you sit down to watch a movie? On its own, popcorn is a nutritious option, but depending on the season of the popcorn brand, it's no wonder many people ask if microwave popcorn is bad for you. While popcorn is a whole grain, low-calorie, high-fiber snack, it's also one of the easiest foods to overeat and can quickly become unhealthy.

To make sure one of the best low-calorie snacks stays healthy, we asked Fox, a registered dietitian, about how to choose healthy microwave popcorn.

"When it comes to [buying the healthiest] microwave popcorn, my advice is to look for a popcorn that has the least amount of ingredients," the dietitian says. "As simple as popcorn is, many brands often include additives, artificial ingredients, extremely processed oils, large amounts of salt and more in their products."

Some nutritional criteria you should look for to determine if a bag of popcorn is healthy are.

1. saturated fat: I would check the saturated fat content. This is also known as 'bad' fat and can have a negative impact on your body. You should limit your saturated intake to between 5 % and 10 % of your total calories. "Unfortunately, microwave popcorn is usually the culprit [of saturated fat intake]." Some popcorn brands contain more than 25 percent of the daily saturated fat content in a small serving.

2. Serving size: "The first thing I recommend people pay attention to is the serving size," says Fox nutritionist, "Almost always, the whole bag is not a serving. You need to read the nutrition facts label to see how many servings are in a bag to avoid too many calories." Fox adds, "Treating yourself to foods you enjoy (even if they're not 'healthy') is part of life; however, popcorn is a very mindless snack. When you eat it, you're usually watching TV."

Fox notes that "most of the ingredients that people should be wary of are actually ingredients that are no longer used in microwave popcorn. Specifically, [manufacturers stopped using] a butter flavoring, diacetyl, which has been linked to an increase in lung damage. "
