Dimple drainage matting is one of the most versatile and effective drainage products on the market. It  can be used for nearly every drainage situation imaginable. Dimpled drainage sheets are used on everything from small residential basements to enormous commercial projects extending 50 feet below grade.  They can even be used horizontally.

What Is a Dimpled Drainage Matting?

Most dimpled drainage matting consist of a polypropylene or high-density polyethylene  sheet, molded into a series of raised knobs, or dimples. Polyethylene dimpled drainage mat helps water flow away from the foundation. Without it, water can stay trapped against the concrete or pool at the bottom. Drainage mats come with a dimpled design that lets water accumulate and flow away, creating an air gap.

When a dimple mat is placed against a concrete wall, the dimples make the plastic stand out from the wall, leaving a free-draining air space between the plastic and the concrete. If any water reaches this air space, it easily flows to the bottom of the dimple mat. As water flows, it picks up small particles of silt and soil. When water stops moving—like when it reaches a concrete wall—silt and soil will accumulate, further increasing the pressure against the foundation. A drainage ma's membrane protects the mat from sediment clogging.

The fact that a thin membrane can move water so efficiently is a major advantage when horizontal drainage is needed.  Instead of using inches of gravel, dimpled sheets can perform the same function in a fraction of an inch.  For applications such as plaza decks and parking garages, the product is installed over a waterproofing layer dimple side up.  Then the final surface is installed over the geotextile. When water penetrates through the pavers or cracks in the concrete deck, the drainage membrane directs the water to floor drains within the slab.

Horizontal applications that involve vegetation are usually installed with the dimples facing down. Installed under golf greens, athletic fields, planters or green roofs, the dimple “cups” act as a water retention layer during dry spells, while excess moisture falls through the perforations and is channeled to drains.  Usually, a separate geotextile is installed over the open dimples to keep soil out.

Ground surface treatment need some points to consider:

The dimpled drainage board can help reduce intermittent hydrostatic pressure because it moves water away before pressure can build against the foundation.

A dampproofing coating is advisable behind drainage boards to prevent incidental moisture infiltration as long as it doesn't interfere with performance or the manufacturer's specifications.

Some drainage panels, as part of overall systems, use specially designed drainage boards in combination with waterproofing membranes, to replace drain tile pipes
