You can't really appreciate your hats unless you understand how they are made. The anatomy of a hat can be broken down as follows.
Brim/sun visor
The brim/sun visor is the part of the hat that protrudes outward in the front. It helps to block the sun and is usually found on many fashion hats and baseball caps.
Crown
The crown is the top of the hat. This may seem crazy, but there are actually over 10 different types of crowns! This includes the cowboy style you see in cowboy hats, as well as the round crown often used in bowler hats/derby hats.
Sweatband
Sweatbands are often found on hats worn while working out or playing sports. This would include baseball caps and visors. It is also used on some felt hats, depending on the manufacturer.
Lining
The lining is the material that lines the inside of the hat. In structured hats like ascots and top hats, this piece is called "buckram".
Lower edge
As the name implies, the lower edge is the lower side of the brim. The brim can be structured, as it is in snapbacks, or it can be unstructured, as it is in "dad" hats.
Buttons
A button is a small piece that sits on top of the baseball cap. It is only there to hide the area where the six pieces of fabric are sewn together.
Holes
Holes are the small holes that decorate the cloth cap. They are there to provide ventilation and keep your head cool.
