A neck brace is a device designed to restrict the movement of your neck. It is most commonly used to treat spinal fractures, but can also be used for other reasons, such as to support your neck after surgery.
A neck brace will keep your neck in the correct position while it heals. It may seem unusual to be unable to turn or shake your head, but limiting neck movement is an important part of treatment and can prevent further injury.
An experienced healthcare professional will measure and fit you with the most appropriate neck brace for your body type and size. They will then teach you how to apply it and make sure it fits properly. You will learn and monitor your application to make sure it fits correctly. You will be instructed how to remove the neck brace for daily cleaning, depending on your individual situation, which may be in a sitting or lying position. You will be informed of the most appropriate position for your situation.
Lie flat on your back, without a pillow.
Keep your head in a neutral position. Do not bend your neck forward, backward, or side to side.
Before removing the neck brace, note the position of the end of the Velcro straps. When you put the neck brace back on, the straps should be in the same position.
Undo the Velcro straps. Remove the front part of the neck brace and slide the back panel out from under the neck.
You must have your doctor's permission to do this.
Sit up straight in a sturdy chair in front of a mirror.
Keep your head and neck in a neutral position (nose in line with your belly button, chin level).
Do not bend your neck forward, backward or sideways. Be careful not to move your neck when completing this procedure.
Undo the Velcro straps and remove the neck brace.
Place the back plate on the back of your neck; make sure it is evenly centered.
Loosely attach the back strap to the front panel, making sure the chin is on top of the chin rest.
While holding the front end securely, curl the ends tightly against the patient's neck.
Alternately tighten the straps, one at a time, until they are in their original position.
