As the world moves to USB-C, it doesn't mean you have to replace all your existing devices. Your new USB-C device (e.g. laptop) will still be compatible with all of your existing devices (smartphones, tablets, mice, printers, etc.), you just need the correct USB-C cable or adapter.
The presence (or lack thereof) of a USB-C port is increasingly becoming a consideration when buying a PC. If you buy a slim laptop, it will almost certainly have at least one USB-C port, which will automatically bring you into the ecosystem. If you prefer a desktop, then you're sure to find those ports there as well, with at least one of them on the motherboard-side I/O panel, and probably more on high-end and gaming desktops.

Some desktop and aftermarket PC cases also put one on the front panel. (However, desktop DIY types should be aware that USB-C ports on the front or top of a PC case require specific USB-C connector connectors on the motherboard side, and only later model motherboards have these.)
Even if you don't need USB-C now, you will need it soon. We've only scratched the surface of USB-C's capabilities, but one thing is for sure: the next generation of cross-platform connectors is rapidly replacing older protections, just as the original USB standard replaced Apple's Desktop Bus (ADB), FireWire, parallel, PS/2, SCSI, and serial ports on Macs and PCs. USB-C is indeed the port that can rule them all.

Reversible connectors. USB-C or Type-C connectors are user-friendly. There is no upward or downward orientation, so it will work whichever way you plug it in.
Truly universal. USB-C works not only with smartphones, tablets, laptops, digital cameras, or any device that traditionally connects via USB, but also with different operating systems like iOS, Android, Windows, Google, and more.
It's really fast. USB-C can transfer data at speeds of up to 10Gbps (gigabits per second). Or complete a full-length HD movie in less than 30 seconds. That's 20 times faster than USB 2.0.

More power. With up to 100 watts or 3 amps of power, the USB-C cable can power almost anything. From laptops to large high-resolution displays and even some printers.
4K Ultra HD experience. USB-C cables can deliver Ultra HD 4K video resolution to both USB-C and HDMI displays. That's four times the resolution of standard HD.
USB-C is not just a new development. It's a new standard. It means that everything it promises - speed, ease of use, versatility - can be applied to a wide range of devices. With so much potential, USB-C has another advantage over existing USB cables: it will be around longer.
