LED lighting represents the latest development in the lighting industry. The energy efficiency and considerable longevity of LED technology has all the potential to transform the way organizations light up their facilities by reducing electricity costs and overall energy use.

What is LED lighting?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. Leds are semiconductor devices that produce light through a process called electroluminescence. When you pass an electric current through a semiconductor material, it emits visible light. As a result, leds are in sharp contrast to photovoltaic cells, which are used in solar arrays to convert visible light into electricity.

In the early 1960s, a young scientist working for General Electric developed the first leds. The company first used them as indicator lights on circuit boards and became known for their durability and energy efficiency. Many cities use second-generation leds, which came on the market in the 1980s and 1990s, as an alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs in street lamps. Some are trying to replace fluorescent lights in outdoor signs with them.

Advantages of LED lighting

LED lighting offers many benefits to industrial and commercial enterprises interested in reducing energy use and costs. Here are some advantages of LED lights:

1. long service life

Leds last much longer than regular incandescent bulbs. The average life of an incandescent light bulb is about 1,000 hours. The average LED lamp has a life span of 50,000 hours. Depending on how you use it, it can last up to 100,000 hours. That means the LEDS will last between six and 12 years before you need to replace them. That's 40 times longer than an incandescent bulb.

Leds last at least two to four times longer, even if you use fluorescent, metal halide or sodium vapor lamps.

So the savings include not only replacement costs, but also maintenance costs for your lighting bill.

2. Energy efficiency

Another leading advantage of LED lighting is its energy efficient operation. You can measure the energy efficiency of a light source in units of useful lumens, which describes the amount of light emitted by the device for each power or watt unit used for the bulb. In the past, we measured light by how many lumens it produced, but the reality was that some of those lumens were wasted. LED lighting produces less waste light and more useful lumens than other lighting technologies.

If you replace all the lighting in your office, school or other facility with leds, your overall energy efficiency could increase by 60 to 70 percent. In some cases, the improvement can be as high as 90 percent, depending on the type of light you're replacing and the type of LED light you're using.

These energy efficiency gains are directly related to financial savings. When you replace conventional light sources with LED lights, your energy usage plummets, making LED lights a smart investment for any business to make a profit!

3. Improve environmental performance

Becoming green is becoming more and more important for companies. Customers are increasingly demanding environmentally friendly options, and using environmentally friendly light sources can help companies reduce energy use and attract a socially conscious consumer base.

The environmental benefits of LED lighting also extend to its manufacturing process. Many traditional light sources, such as fluorescent lamps and mercury vapor lamps, use mercury internally as part of their structure. Therefore, special treatment is required when they reach the end of their useful life. You don't have to worry about any of these issues with LED lights.

4. Ability to work in cold conditions

Traditional light sources don't like cold weather. When the temperature drops, light sources, especially fluorescent lamps, require higher voltages to turn on, and their light intensity decreases.

Leds, on the other hand, performed about 5% better in cold temperatures. That's why LED lights are a better choice for lighting needed for freezers, meat lockers, refrigerated Spaces, or refrigerated display cabinets. Their ability to operate efficiently in cold weather also makes them a perfect choice for parking lot lights, lights for lighting the perimeter of buildings, and lights for outdoor signage.

5. No heat or ultraviolet emission

If you've ever tried to replace incandescent bulbs as soon as they go out, you know how hot they get in use. Many traditional lighting sources (such as incandescent bulbs) use more than 90% of the energy they use for heating, with only 10% allocated to actual light production.

Leds emit almost no heat, and most of the light they emit falls within the visible spectrum. This property is one of the reasons medical experts see leds as a possible solution to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which affects many people during the darker months of the year.

It also makes leds ideal for illuminating artwork that degrades or disintegrates over time due to exposure to ULTRAVIOLET light.

6. Design flexibility

Leds are very small (about the size of a pepper). This means they can be used for almost any application. Remember, their original purpose was as an indicator light on a circuit board. If you combine them into a bundle, you will create a traditional light bulb. If you string a series of LED lights together, you will create one or a series of lights -- just like a string of Christmas lights.

Think of the facility lighting options that this gives you. LED devices can be so small that you can use them to illuminate everything from a workshop to a major League football stadium.

Commercial LED lighting solutions

Whether you are looking for energy efficiency, easier maintenance or improved environmental performance through lighting technology, LED lighting is your solution.
