Dewatering is the process of separating a solid mixture into a liquid. The main purpose of dewatering is to keep the liquid components out of the solid elements. For a long time, construction and industrial projects have been practicing dewatering processes to keep their respective projects going.
There are two main principles of dewatering. The first is sedimentation. Sedimentation uses gravity or other centrifugal means to separate the solid elements from the liquid. The other principle is filtration. By filtration, a filter medium is used to separate the solids from the liquid.
In dewatering, vibrating screens can recover almost all solid particles from liquids, slurries, or sludge. To date, two types of vibrating screens are available for dewatering applications
Circular Vibrating Screen
The inclined dewatering screen structure allows the slurry to move toward the discharge end. The material will then be filtered through appropriate screening media and screened out of the water on that material. The gravity enhanced by the vertical vector of gravity allows for the complete separation of the water from the solid material.
While inclined dewatering screens can certainly do the job of filtration, this type of vibrating screen will be subject to gravity when the material is transported, dragging water back into the filtered product. One way to solve this problem is to reduce the inclination of the screen. However, making this adjustment may cause your product to become a bit wet, as the speed at which the material moves drops dramatically.
A key issue with using an inclined dewatering screen is its end product. Some products from this dewatering screen may contain a significant amount of moisture. These products are bound to cause damage to the belt rollers once they flow back on the conveyor belt. In addition, consumers may even avoid paying for products outside of the inclined dewatering screen.

The inclination of the horizontal screen is not 100% flat. In fact, horizontal dewatering screens have a negative inclination of about 3°. This type of screen creates a gravity force that is aligned at 45° and transports the material upward. The gravitational forces of this type of screen are fully utilized in the dewatering process by enhancing the vertical portion of the acceleration.
With these forces, the horizontal dewatering screen will create a layer of material from the slurry on the screen. This material layer is pushed out of the wet zone towards the discharge end. In addition, with the help of the post-dewatering field, the amount of water just after feeding into the screen is reduced. As the material layer becomes thicker, the liquid part of the slurry is pressed out. Fine particles are also captured by this thick material layer. The dam at the discharge end improves the quality of the filtered product.
In summary, a dewatering screen can separate the liquid fraction from the solid fraction if there is a large angle between material transport and gravity. In addition, if there is a filter cake bridge opening, the material loss will be minimized.
Dewatering is mainly used in construction and industrial projects because it provides dry solid elements with very fine particles. Using a vibrating screen is cost-effective because it does not waste any material. To learn more about dewatering and the wonders of vibrating screens, contact us now.
