How to Check Your Washer Pump?

If you turn on your washer after completing a cycle and find that the water is still there, it doesn't mean you need a new washer. In fact, you may not even have to call a repair specialist. There are only two possible causes: something is stuck in the drain or the pump is faulty. However, you won't be able to tell which it is without looking inside the washer, which you can do by removing the front panel.

Once you can see what is happening, the next steps you need to take will be obvious.

Unplug the machine and pull it away from the wall. Drain as much water as possible with a cup, then use a sponge to soak up any remaining water.

Tilt the machine back and place a 2 x 4 block under the two front feet, indicating the household handyman.

Locate the screws holding the front panel in place. There are usually two under the top of the toe kick near the floor. If the machine is a top loader, the entire front panel will come off. If it is a front loader, only the part under the door will come off.

Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws, then tilt the panel outward to remove it while lifting it to unclip the top of the panel from the machine. You should see the drain pump attached to the bottom panel. It is connected to the drain hose.

Remove the drain hose by unscrewing the clips that hold it to the pump outlet. Look for clogs in the hose, says the family handyman. If you don't see anything, the pump may be clogged or malfunctioning. To check it, you must disconnect the belt connected to the drive motor.

Reach under the machine and pull the belt off the pump flywheel. It is not very thick and you should be able to stretch it with your fingers enough to remove it. With the belt removed, try turning the pump flywheel; it should turn freely. If it does not, something may be stuck in the pump housing.

If the pump spins freely, stick your finger into the drain and feel the impellers. One or more of them may be damaged. If so, you will be able to feel them when you turn the pump flywheel with your other hand. You may also see pieces of plastic at the bottom of the pump housing.

Remove the blockage or replace the pump as needed.

Tips

Some manufacturers offer a filter that traps the lint before it reaches the pump. If the filter is clogged, the machine will not drain. You should have access to the filter after removing the front panel.

If the pump is broken, you may hear a sound while the machine is running.
