Can I Use A Microfiber Cloth To Wash My Car?

Keeping your car clean can be time consuming and expensive. Lines at automatic car washes are long at peak times, meaning you can wait in line for an hour or more just to get your car clean. Touchless car washes don’t clean your car very well, so the money you pay to wash your car doesn’t achieve the quality results you need.

You can wash your car yourself in as little time as it takes to go through an automatic car wash. If you use high-quality materials, it may cost a little extra initially but after a few uses, they’ll have paid for themselves.

Microfiber cloths are a relatively recent addition to the marketplace for home use and have already proven to be an excellent investment when it comes to cleaning and dusting around the house, the garage, as well as cleaning your car inside and out.

So what makes microfiber so effective?

Microfiber cloths are a synthetic material made up of tiny strands. Each strand is about 1% the diameter of a human hair and can be tightly woven to create an ultra-absorbent material. The strands are made of fibers such as nylon, Kevlar, and polyester, and are extremely strong and durable, making them ideal for automotive uses. They capture and pull away dirt and dust into their fibers unlike many other natural and synthetic fabrics, which smear dust and dirt around the surface.

While vacuums for cars have come a long way in keeping interior upholstery tidy, the implementation of microfiber fabrics has been huge for car cleaning and detailing. Compared with materials like cotton or paper, microfibers are much softer, more absorbent, less abrasive, and less likely to leave lint. These traits make them especially useful for towel-drying a wet coat of paint after a wash. For this purpose, the cloths can be gently swept over the surface of the paint and pick up excess water without leaving a mark. More rigid varieties of microfiber can also be used to apply polish, wash glass, and to dust off interior surfaces.

What to Look For when buying a microfiber car cloths?

There are three main factors to consider when buying a microfibre car towel, those being the pile height, the texture, and the material composition. Pile height measure the softness of the cloth. For the purpose of drying the car, the softest possible fabric should be used, but more abrasive towels can be used for polishing paint or cleaning hard plastics. Texture varieties include “waffle” and “suede.”

The waffle type provides higher absorbency, while suede ensures uniform softness across the cloth. When it comes to composition, microfiber is usually about 80% polyester fabric to 20% polyamide. The polyester gives the material its trademark softness, and the polyamide lends absorbency. We find that premium towels tend to contain a little bit higher concentration of polyamide compared to budget brands. The microfibre car towel also come in a range of sizes, from just a few inches wide to multiple feet. Most products can also be machine washed and reused dozens of times under normal conditions.
