Medical sponge swab have a shelf life of two years, but once sterilized, they should not be used for more than 24 hours, after which even sterile sponge swab are considered "germy."

Ordinary sponge swab should only be used for non-aseptic operations, and should not be directly touched with the wound. As long as they are well stored, ventilated and dry, they can prolong their aging.
