The kitchen is filled with a myriad of tools and appliances that help us do everything from cooking to washing dishes. But one of the most overlooked aspects of the kitchen is almost always the kitchen towel.

You may have heard kitchen towels called by several different names, including dish towels, tea towels and chef's towels. Technically, these are all kitchen towels because they are used in the kitchen, but they actually refer to some of their many uses and types. Before delving into kitchen towels, their many uses and types, it is best to explain what they are.

What are kitchen towels?

By definition, kitchen towels are the towels you use in your kitchen. This may seem simple enough, but there is more to it than that. These towels are intended to be used throughout the kitchen and in any number of situations, making them one of the most versatile and useful kitchen items you will own.

For example, kitchen towels are usually more sturdy than regular bath towels. They are able to absorb, but they are also used to wipe up spills, clean chopping boards, dry plates, dry hands and even to hold hot plates and platters in place.

These towels are usually made from cotton, making them soft enough to absorb, but durable enough to withstand repeated use and washing. They are usually thick and are hemmed at the ends to make them even stronger.

Although kitchen towels are quite versatile, they are also usually very stylish. Kitchen towels come in a wide range of colours and textures and can easily be mixed and matched to better suit your home's decor. Some are solid colours, while others are white with different coloured accents and stripes.

It is common for people to stock up on kitchen towels for their homes. This allows them to have a new set ready to go when others get dirty and get thrown in the washing machine, or simply change styles and colours depending on the season and decorating choices.

You should have clean kitchen towels on hand every time you cook. This offers you an easy way to have a ready-to-use towel while maintaining hygiene.

What materials are used?

There are several different types of kitchen linen, which also means they come in different materials. Here are some of the most common ones.

Cotton

Cotton is the most common material used for kitchen towels and it's easy to see why. When used correctly, cotton is versatile, soft and very absorbent. The vast majority of kitchen towels are made from cotton, although the stitching or weave may vary. Towels with a tighter weave tend to be more durable and offer higher absorbency.

Linen

This material is often found in more decorative kitchen towels and can be made into thinner products. Linen kitchen towels are often best used as decorative items, or for wiping away blemishes - but mostly just for decoration. They tear and rip easily and have a low level of absorbency.

Microfiber

As the name suggests, microfibre kitchen towels are made from tiny microfibres that help to remove dirt and food from surfaces. These towels are good for cleaning, but tend to be more fragile and less durable when used as general kitchen towels. They may also be less absorbent.
