First of all, two concepts must be clarified: What is a tractor? What is a trailer? The front of the vehicle with driving capability is called a tractor, and the vehicle with no driving capability behind it is called a trailer, and the trailer is towed away by the tractor. The full-trailer and semi-trailer are differentiated based on the different connection methods of the front tractors.

The most obvious difference between the full-hung and the half-hung is that the full-hung can stand firmly with independent support, while the half-hung must be held on the front legs.

A full trailer is well understood literally. The load of the entire trailer is borne by the trailer itself, and it is only connected to the main vehicle by a hook. The main vehicle does not need to bear the trailer load, but only provides power to realize the traction and steering of the full trailer. A typical full trailer is generally composed of a frame, a cargo platform (top loading), a tow bar (frame) (with hanging loop), steering device, suspension, wheels, braking system, signal system, etc. At present, full trailers are mainly used for transportation in docks, factories, ports and other fields.

Semi-trailers are developed on the basis of full trailers. The semi-trailer is the front half of the trailer resting on the traction saddle on the rear section of the tractor, and the bridge behind the tractor bears part of the weight of the trailer.

Semi-trailer is the most commonly used and most familiar trailer for us. There are many types of semi-trailers, including flatbed, gooseneck, concave beam and various special semi-trailers, which almost cover the more commonly used models. Due to its flexible application and large carrying capacity, semi-trailers are especially suitable for long-distance and high-grade road transportation, and they have become the most important means of transportation among road transport vehicles.

The third type of trailer: center axle trailer

In addition to full-trailer and semi-trailer, there is actually a third category of trailers-central axle trailers. The main weight is borne by the trailer, the main vehicle bears a small part of the weight of the trailer, and the traction and steering are completed by the main vehicle. It is specifically defined as a trailer whose traction device cannot move vertically (relative to the trailer) and the axle is located close to the center of gravity of the trailer (when the load is uniform). Only a small vertical load (not more than 10% of the maximum designed total mass of the trailer or 10000N, whichever is the lesser of the two) acts on the tractor.

The structure of the central axle trailer is between a full trailer and a semi-trailer, and is generally suitable for running on high-grade highways.
