Anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a new microbial community that can simultaneously remove carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and other pollutants in a single sludge system. Anaerobic granular sludge treatment technology has been developing, but the granulation process of anaerobic sludge may not be well understood.

  

In this review, upflow anaerobic sludge tank (UASB), expanded granular sludge tank (EGSB) and static granular bed reactor (SGBR) are introduced as the components of representative anaerobic granular sludge treatment processes. The characteristics and application trend of each reactor are introduced.

  

UASB reactors were developed in the late 1970s and their use rapidly gained popularity due to their excellent performance. Using activated particles, the reactor can treat various high concentration wastewater and municipal wastewater. Most soluble industrial effluents can be efficiently applied using UASB. EGSB reactors were developed to provide more contact between wastewater and particulate matter. In this reactor, a rapid rise rate is used to separate the dispersed sludge from the mature particles. EGSB reactors show excellent performance in treating low and/or high concentration wastewater, especially at low temperatures.

SGBR, developed by Iowa State University, is one of the anaerobic granular sludge treatment processes. Despite the simplicity of the SGBR configuration, the performance of the system is similar to that of UASB or EGSB reactors. In laboratory and pilot-scale experiments, anaerobic sludge granulation process shows excellent performance for various wastewater at various organic loading rates. This has led to the establishment of thousands of full-size pelleting processes that are already widely used around the world.

  

Advantages of anaerobic granular sludge

Anaerobic granular sludge is an aggregate of highly active anaerobic bacteria formed in the treatment of organic wastewater. As a microecosystem, it is rich in various anaerobic microbial populations and has self-equilibrium performance, which can degrade various organic pollutants in the original wastewater. Used to start anaerobic reactor in high concentration organic wastewater treatment system. Anaerobic granular sludge is a form of microbial immobilization, which is slightly heavier than water and has good settling performance and methanogenic activity.

  

AGS differs from activated sludge in physical, chemical and microbial properties and provides a compact and economical treatment method for removing oxidizing and reducing pollutants from wastewater. AGS sequencing batch reactors have demonstrated their utility in treating slaughterhouses, livestock, rubber, landfills, leachate, dairy products, breweries, textiles, and other wastewater.

AGS has been extensively studied for widespread implementation in wastewater treatment plants. However, AGS takes a relatively long time to develop when dealing with low concentrations of wastewater such as sewage. When treating low-concentration wastewater, AGS can be promoted by strategies such as increasing short-cycle volume flow rate and mixing effluent with industrial wastewater.

  

Application of anaerobic granular sludge

1. Start UASB, IC, EGSB and anaerobic device. New anaerobic plants begin with the addition of anaerobic granular sludge from other well-functioning reactors.
