When the Razor Wire Fell From the Capitol

Artist Katherine Ludwig stood on Washington Street, watching five contractors unplug the razor wire from an 8-foot height and painted the scene in blue ink. The black fence erected around the Capitol since the January 6 riot.

"I have to draw fast! These guys are walking too fast," Ludwig said as he stood on a standing folding bicycle, balancing a piece of white cardboard on the sidewalk next to the fence.

On Saturday afternoon, workers removed the razor wire from the black fence around the Capitol. A worker said that they had demolished about 1.5 miles.

Allie said she hopes that once the fence drops, Capitol Hill can return to a bit of normalcy.

"We took a bus tour today, of course, we walked through all the monuments, but the bus tour didn't even bypass the Capitol. I think it was because of all the walls," Julie Mohead said.

Elaine Wilson, another local artist from Silver Spring, stood on an easel at the corner of Southeast D Street and New Jersey Avenue. Wilson has been painting her Capitol with a fence fence for two weeks.

Wilson chuckled: "I'm really ready to take down the fence. If I don't make any paintings, it may be good for the city." "I would rather we put down the fence than draw a bunch of paintings by ourselves."

Katherine Ludwig's paint was used as a group of contractors to remove razor wires from the black fence around the Capitol.
