On a cold winter night, there's nothing more inviting than a warm bedroom. Instead of using your heater, you can escape the chill with a cost-effective, cozy Electric Blanket.

How much electricity does an electric blanket use?

Generally speaking, electric blankets use very little energy as they radiate heat through the built-in cord. On average, they cost about 4 cents per hour, compared to about 15 cents per hour that some space heaters may cost.

How long do you need to run it?

Electric blankets are very efficient heaters, so you usually only need to run them on the average setting for about 10 to 30 minutes before they shut off. Since warm air is trapped under your electric blanket, you should stay warm all night - you probably won't need a space heater. Many electric blankets also come with timers that can be pre-set to turn off. We do not recommend using an electric blanket all night, even if it has an all-night mode.

What types of blankets are available?

The most common type is the electric blanket, which is mounted underneath the bed sheet. However, there are also Electric Heated Blanket, which are placed on top of your doona and keep a constant temperature throughout the night. There are even blankets that heat your couch, which can minimize or eliminate the need for a heater in your lounge.

What should I look for when purchasing?

Make sure the blanket has an overheat protection sensor to turn it off if it gets too hot and a controller with raised markings for operation in the dark. Blankets that fit well are more convenient than those with cords, and blankets with wool should be more comfortable than thinner ones. Choose a product with a high energy efficiency rating.

Are electric blankets safe?

Yes, as long as you take care of them and roll them up when you store them. Replace your blankets if they have: bent cords, burn marks, frayed fabric, exposed elements, moisture, worn patches, damaged cords, or loose connections.

All blankets, even those in good condition, should be replaced every 10 years. In addition, young children are advised not to use them due to the need for control. And never use them in the crib.
