"What is NPK?" Read on to learn more about fertilizer quantities and NPK. What do the numbers on the fertilizer mean? The three numbers on the fertilizer represent the value of the three main nutrients used by plants. These main nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) or NPK for short. The higher the quantity, the more concentrated the nutrients in the fertilizer. For example, fertilizers listed as 20-5-5 contain four times the nitrogen content of phosphorus and potassium. The concentration of all three nutrients in 20-20-20 fertilizer is twice that of 10-10-10. The amount of fertilizer can be used to calculate the amount of fertilizer to be added to the soil equal to 1 pound (453.5 grams) of nutrients. So if the number on the fertilizer is 10-10-10, you can divide 100 by 10, which will tell you you need 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of fertilizer to add 1 pound (453.5 grams) of nutrients to the soil. If the amount of fertilizer is 20-20-20, divide 100 by 20 and you will know that 5 pounds (2 k) of fertilizer are needed to add 1 pound (453.5 grams) of nutrients to the soil. Other values for fertilizers containing only one macronutrient will be "0". For example, if the fertilizer is 10-0-0, it only contains nitrogen.
