"Misunderstandings" in the treatment of ichthyosis

During our aid for ichthyosis patients, we found that many patients have entered the "misunderstanding" of treating ichthyosis. Therefore, we have summarized 3 suggestions based on our experience, hoping to help you.

1. Never use "self-harm" to get rid of skin scale

Among the ichthyosis patients we have aid, they have more or less the experience of being discriminated against because their skin is different from others, with their “ignorance” of the condition, they use their hands or  a blade to scrape the scale on the body surface, many of them, especially the patients with physical scars, even though ichthyosis has been cured, the body still has pigmentation that can never be diminished.

2.Avoid blind skin care

Ichthyosis is a functional disorder of the skin caused by genetic problems. Many hospitals said that it cannot be treated, so ichthyosis patients have to choose skin care products themselves: glycerin, vaseline, olive oil, etc.

For example, vaseline only forms a protective film for the skin itself, which makes the skin's moisture evaporate slower, and when the weather is dry, it will absorb the moisture of the skin when the weather is dry, causing the skin to become drier.

However, these products can only relieve dry skin. If you want to cure ichthyosis, you must go through treatment to restore the skin function.

3. Avoid blind treatment

Oral drugs, such as Acitretin, if taken for a long time, can also cause skin atrophy, darkening, and hardening, which can cause a sense of dependence and increase the difficulty of treating fish scale skin.

External medications, such as silicone cream, tretinoin, tretinoin ointment, urea cream, etc., contain large amounts of mercury and arsenic. After such external medications are used, they can also cause skin atrophy, thinning, and stiffness.
