Basalt is an igneous rock formed by underground magma ejected from volcanoes or condensed from surface fissures. Basalt can be divided into basalt, alkaline basalt, and high-aluminum basalt according to its different composition; according to its different structure, it can be divided into stomatal basalt, almond-shaped basalt, and basalt glass; according to its different filling minerals, it can be divided into olivine basalt and purple Su pyroxene basalt and so on. Basalt can be divided into basalt, alkaline basalt, and high-aluminum basalt according to its composition.

The color of basalt is mostly black, dark brown or dark green. Because of its dense texture, its specific gravity is heavier than general granite, limestone, sandstone and shale.

1. Basalt fiber

Basalt is a common paving stone, but after special treatment, it can change its shape and become a high-performance fiber material with metallic luster-basalt fiber. The strength of this fiber is 5 to 10 times that of steel, but its weight is about one-third of the same volume of steel. Compared with before, the application value is greatly improved. Therefore, some people vividly refer to its manufacturing technology as "the technique of turning stones into gold".

2. Application of basalt fiber

Basalt Fiber has a wide range of applications, and can be used in aviation, aerospace, building materials, road and bridge construction, shipbuilding, wind power generation and other fields. Hou Jinlong, deputy director of the Expert Committee of the Chinese Highway Society, introduced: “Road basalt fiber can effectively reduce pavement cracks and rutting diseases, greatly extend the service life of the pavement, and improve and enhance the high-temperature stability and low-temperature crack resistance of the pavement structure. There is a significant effect."

At the end of 2018, the famous Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was closed for maintenance and opened to traffic again. The upgraded version of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge uses basalt fiber in key parts. Basalt fiber has excellent tensile strength and reinforcement. Bridge construction personnel bond the basalt fiber to the concrete members to reinforce the bridge to make the bridge lighter and longer lasting.

In addition, my country has also used basalt fiber in the construction of Hangzhou-Jinheng-Hengzhou Expressway, Zhengzhou-Wanzhou High-speed Railway, and South China Sea Reefs.

3. prospects

It is predicted that during the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, domestic basalt fiber output will reach a scale of more than 150,000 tons. As long as the performance, quality and quantity of basalt fiber products meet the requirements, its market potential is very large. Some insiders estimate that at present, the basalt fiber produced in the world still cannot meet one percent of the demand. Some analysts believe that in recent decades, domestic composite materials have developed rapidly and have a solid foundation for the development and application of continuous basalt fibers. Moreover, China has a vast territory, extremely rich basalt deposits, and a huge market for the application of new materials. In addition, Basalt Ore is a natural material, and no boron or other alkali metal oxides are emitted during the production process. Therefore, no harmful substances are precipitated in the smoke and dust, and it will not pollute the atmosphere. It is an environmentally friendly material.
